- Scalable and Flexible Design
- Protection and Redundancy Options
Introduction
For network operators seeking cost-effective digital (pulse code modulated, or PCM) voice conferencing and data bridging alternatives, the Signal Processing System (SPS) offers flexible digital signal processing based solutions, including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)/telemetry applications. The SPS product line serves as a building block for a variety of bridging/conferencing applications, many of which are no longer adequately supported by alternative solutions due to cost or legacy product obsolescence issues.
When the SPS-1000 is used with Sycamore DNX-11 and DNX-88 multiservice cross-connects, the combined solution provides up to 480 protected channels (DS0s) or 960 unprotected channels of conferencing/bridging capacity. The SPS product integrates easily with the DNX-11 and DNX-88 to offer a highly fault-tolerant solution that maximizes network availability. By minimizing up-front capital and footprint costs, SPS-based solutions conserve money and rack space without sacrificing application flexibility or system robustness.
Applications
Data Polling for example, SCADA networks found in oil, gas, electric, and water utility industries, and highway and railway transportation systems. Other data applications include remote automatic bank teller machine control, automatic credit card verification systems, and ticket reservation systems.
Audio/Voice Conferencing for example, specialized conferencing networks (e.g., Hoot ‘n’ Holler) used by brokerage firms and commodities traders; oil, gas, electric, and water utilities; news and weather bureaus, and other industries.
SPS-1000 Products
The SPS-1000 system is housed in a 19"/23" rack-mountable chassis and utilizes only two rack units (RU) of vertical space. The mid-plane chassis can house up to four module sets, or two 1+1 protected signal-processing resources. System reliability is further enhanced with optional AC or DC redundant power and a management interface that allows for both local and remote configuration and diagnostics.
Downloadable system software ensures investment protection for the SPS-1000, enabling the operator to leverage additional functions required by network buildout, or to create and deliver new services.
SPS-1000 Chassis
The SPS-1000 chassis is the fundamental building block for SPS solutions. A space-efficient horizontal design houses all SPS application modules, and provides power, cooling, and monitoring resources. The SPS-1000 is easily rack mounted, either by itself or with the DNX-11 and DNX-88 access concentration platforms.
SPS-1000 chassis redundancy features include dual load sharing and hot-swappable power supplies with independent feeds, hot-swappable fan tray, and integrated system monitoring of power supplies and feeds, fans, and chassis temperature via RS-232, 10Base-T, and status LEDs.
- Space saving (2 RU), modular system
- High-availability, fault-tolerant architecture
- Integrated system monitoring via RS-232, 10Base-T, or status LEDs
- Web graphical user interface (GUI)
- NEBS Level 3-compliant design
Octal T1/E1-DSP41 Module Set
The Octal T1/E1-DSP41 (OT1E1-DSP41) Module Set offers network operators a flexible digital signal processing (DSP) solution capable of a variety of telephony functions, including providing up to 240 DS0s of data bridging and voice conferencing per module.
The OT1E1-DSP41 terminates eight software-selectable T1/E1 spans in a single slot design. A 1+1 equipment protection scheme, hot-swap support, and front and rear access ensure a robust, high-availability solution.
- Hot-swappable front/rear module set
- Ethernet-based element management
- 1 + 1 equipment protection when deployed with DNX
- Local or remote software upgrades
- Integrated loopback and BERT testing
Application Software
The Octal T1/E1-DSP41 Module Set is typically equipped with multi-party conferencing software for data bridging and voice conferencing applications, including software-configurable modes for:
- Summing/distribution (analog split data)
- Multi-way, and multi-way with output isolation bridging
- Manual and automatic gain control (AGC)
- Noise filtering (squelch), dynamic participant addition and removal, and more

Data Bridging
Data bridging is required by host-listener poll-able networks in which the host (central computer) sequentially polls listeners (e.g., analog modems) before allowing them to send data. The OT1E1-DSP41 conferencing software allows for the configuration of a poll-able multipoint circuit whereby individual listener data stations transmit to the central host after a protocol prompt from the host.
Data bridging configurations are used in the SCADA data collection networks found in oil, gas, electric, and water utilities; in highway and railway transportation systems; to control remote automatic bank teller machines, ticket reservation systems, automatic credit-card verification systems, and in many other applications.

Voice Conferencing
Functionality also includes full duplex voice conferencing in which conferences are pre-arranged by network operators. Individual participants need only go off-hook or dial-in to a switch connected to the OT1E1-DSP41 to join the conference.
Voice conferencing configurations are useful for applications such as Hoot n Holler specialized audio conferencing networks found in brokerage, utility, news media, weather bureau, mass transit, and many other industries, and operator-unassisted enterprise voice conferences.

Link/Facility Protection
SPS-1000 systems can be deployed with the DNX-11 and DNX-88 platforms for maximum redundancy and availability. Leveraging the PSX-5300 Protection Switch for DNX device-level protection and Automatic Protection Switching (APS) features for T1/E1 link protection, an SPS/DNX combination can provide up to 480 DS0-level channels of protected bridging and conferencing functionality for mission-critical applications.
